Changes to the Blog

It’s time for winter-cleaning, and by that I mean updating my blog. In case you haven’t been to Cat on the Bookshelf lately, I have updated the theme from Kelly to Button to better fit my personality. I like this direction for my blog, and I’ve been pretty sick of using the same theme. Frankly, I think it’s a more engaging theme.

I have also updated my About page, so please check it out.

Organizing My Posts

I’m planning to reorganize all of my blog posts under different categories because the current categories aren’t working for me. I want to categorize the reviews by genre instead of age level (Young Adult and Children’s). The genres I will categorize are

  • Contemporary Realistic Fiction
  • Historical Fiction
  • Fantasy
  • Science Fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • Poetry.

I am aware that nonfiction can be broken into informational and biographical books, but I do not read or review enough of either to bother separating them right now. The categories are subject to change or be added to.

The categories I will not change are classics, author, movie/television, quotes, and images. I might leave Young Adult on there, but most of my reviews are for young adult books. I will leave the Graphic Novel category alone for the time being since I still have only reviewed a handful, and I think it is important to distinguish this format from your typical novel.

There are categories I will consolidate. For memes, book tags, and weekly things I once did, I want to throw it all under book tags or some other collective name. Book vs. Film is going back under Movie/Television, and the name might shorten anyway. I might go as far as to change it to “Adaptations.”

This won’t happen immediately, but I would I like to make these changes for the next few weeks before the new year. I will post a notification when it is all complete.

Thought for the Future

I’m debating about creating a second blog for picture books since taking a children’s literature course this semester. One of the larger issues I have with starting another book blog is that I have posted some children’s books on here, mostly of the middle grade and classic variety. Any input would be helpful. Should I create a second blog for picture books and lower-level chapter books, or should I stick to this blog and keep working on it?

The signs are everywhere, and I googled “kitten on the bookshelf” (the blog title I was thinking of going with). I found this YouTube video of a kitten asleep on the bookshelf:

It has the right components of the name I was thinking of, to continue in the tradition of Cat on the Bookshelf. It has my cat’s name, and it’s pretty dang cute. I don’t know whether or not I will go through with starting a children’s book blog. Any thoughts, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated in the comment section.

Book review coming next week: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

To anyone who is or will be taking finals in the next week or so: Best of Luck!

Reading Update

It’s been a while since I posted a review. School has been super busy, so there has been less time to read and post reviews. I will be posting a review for Flunked by Jen Calonita in the next one to two days. I’ve also been slow to post a review for Half Bad by Sally Green. It’s taken time to digest the book and come to some conclusions to write a review for it. Hopefully I will have that posted in a week. Thank you for your patience!

Week-Long Hiatus

I’m going on hiatus for a week or two. I don’t count on being able to access the Internet for that time because I’m moving. If I happen upon a router or if I get Internet hooked up quickly, I’ll post something. For now, don’t expect a post until August 10th or 11th.

I did read part of Robin LaFevers, but I can’t get through it. I blame it on the writing style and the lack of time I have to read as I’m packing. There will be a review of E.T.A Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker coming soon, maybe during the hiatus if I’m lucky.

Happy reading, everyone. I’ll see you in two weeks!

New Look

If you haven’t seen my blog since yesterday, you will notice that Cat on the Bookshelf has a new look. I felt my blog needed a new look.

All the stuff that was in the sidebar is now in the footer. The Series page is updated and will continue to be updated.

While updating that page, I noticed I never reviewed City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. So whenever I get to rereading it or find myself with a lot extra time on my hands, I will write that  review and get it posted.

Here’s the re-vamped Cat on the Bookshelf. Thank you for all of you who have been following from the beginning and all of you new followers!

Updates to the Blog

I have been neglecting to post very often. I’m sorry about that, so I will try to set up a schedule.

Here are some updates to weekly posts:

  • The categories have been changed and updated. What you see on the side is what I currently have for my categories.
  • I know I haven’t written a Review/Discussion in months. I promise to post something this weekend.
  • Word of the Week (WotW) is being brought back and will be maintained weekly. My goal is to post it every Wednesday. If I fail to post on Wednesday, it will be up by Thursday.
  • I’m featuring a new weekly post. It’s important to improve our memories, so I’m memorizing a poem every Monday. We will begin referring to this as the Poem of the Week (PotW). If it’s short (e.g. haiku), I may work on memorizing two for that week. You may choose to memorize them as well. In the PotW I will present my thoughts and/or analysis of the poem. If you have any suggestions for poems, you may suggest them in the comments section of each PotW post.

I have some ideas for posts, so I want you to vote on these polls:

Alright, you have two weeks from today to answer these polls and to comment on this. I will post another update to let you know what won out. Thank you to those who have continued to follow my blog, even though I haven’t posting often.
