February 2019 Fanfiction Reading Challenge Check-In

We’re near the end of the month, and I realized that I hadn’t published the check-in post for February. I think that was because I didn’t know what to write because I haven’t read a single fanfic this month. It’s been a busy month, and the most reading I could do this month was a few novels and I fell behind in actually writing reviews for the books I’ve read.

I can’t blame school for why I fell behind on fanfiction-reading, but this break is consistent with my pattern from last year. Maybe I read too much fanfic over a couple of months and then need a break again come February every year. I imagine that I will pick up reading more fanfic in a couple of months.

For now, I will devote this check-in to listing fanfics other than The Folk of the Air series fanfic because I read more fanfics in January than what I listed in the first check-in post. Because I wrote this post in a short period of time, I’m going to focus on the other fics that count toward Option 2, the checklist challenge.

An abandoned fic

Hope is the Thing with Colors by JJCross

This Danny Phantom fanfic takes a twist on the Ghost Zone by turning all of the ghosts into angels and demons, but most of them are demons. Danny is half-angel in, and every demon is out for the feathers on his wings. Vlad is a half-demon who wants to corrupt Danny. It’s basically a Pompous Pep (the ship name for Vlad and Danny) fic that looks like an unhealthy relationship to me. The story came to a pause during a really questionable moment where we learn about Vlad’s past. JJCross announced in the last chapter that the fic has been discontinued, and, unlike many abandoned fanfics that I’ve read, they shared their notes for the planned plot.

A fic that is less than 10,000 words

The Winter Devil by Kaede Ravensdale

This 3,281-word Harry Potter fanfic is an odd fanfic where Voldemort, the Winter Devil, is this monster that lives on a mountain and finds it painful to speak any human language painful. Harry is a young, mute boy who grew up as an orphan after age 7. The Winter Devil developed an obsession of watching the boy every winter and wants to protect him. The story stops at Voldemort collecting the village sacrifice and choosing to not kill him. I believe this fic is abandoned, so I consider it complete for the purposes of hitting the checkbox at this point in the year.

Read fanfics from more than 1 or 2 fandoms

The two fanfics I mentioned before this checklist item are from the Danny Phantom and Harry Potter universes. In my previous check-in, I talked exclusively about reading fanfics from The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black. That’s three fandoms.

Let’s Review.

For Option 2, I read three more fanfics than the three I listed last month. I’m now at 33% of the way to my goal.
