One of the greatest challenges of reading fanfiction is finding the gems among all the poorly written stories and the stories that have been abandoned. Of course, there are some gems among the abandoned stories, but it’s frustrating that they aren’t ever going to be completed.
My OTP is Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter. Since I love Drarry fics and have read a lot, I thought I would share some of my favorites.
All of the stories that I list below are completed. I have reread these stories time and time again. Some of them I have reread without realizing until midway through the story that I have read and loved this story before.
WARNINGS:
- Some of these stories have spelling and grammar errors.
- All of these are on FanFiction.Net because that is my favorite source of fanfiction.
- Most of these stories are slash and may have other themes that people find reprehensible.

5. Family Means More Than Blood by WingsOfADream
A prophecy made in 1975 drastically changes the life of the boy who should have been known as Harry Potter. DMHP main couple, onesided LVHP also includes adoptivefather!Snape 😀
When I first read this, I loved the Drarry relationship, but I also loved the elfin religion that Harry ends up joining. Let me back up. This is a story where Harry is raised by Snape and is friends with Draco from a young age. Because of financial constraints, he attends an elfin school for a while where he becomes a member of an elfin religion, which plays a large role in Harry’s life throughout the entire book. There is also the element of Voldy being a real creeper. The story has a large cast of characters and a lot of character development.
This is a long story: 65 chapters and 422,104 words. If you have the time, it’s a great read.
Note: This story was published before the release of Deathly Hallows.
4. Sanguis Vita Est by Shigure-san
[DRACOxHarry, Vampire!Draco] Whilst Voldemort’s prisoner, Draco is made a vampire and forced to drink Harry’s blood. Exploding with rage at what he now is, he helps Harry to kill Voldemort. But once back at Hogwarts, Draco finds himself addicted to Harry’s blood.
A few tropes that could have gone wrong but didn’t:
- Unlike many of the Creature!Draco stories that I have read, this is not a soulmate story. Draco is truly “addicted” to Harry’s blood, which disturbs them both.
- For there being an “Eighth Year” at Hogwarts, the seriousness of such a year level being created and lived through was written very well.
There are themes of responsibility, trust, and greed for power.

3. Mongoose by Lomonaaeren
HPDM preslash. Draco has found acceptance and power with the nest of vampires who claimed him for their own. Then his nest leader decided to hunt Harry Potter. First in a series of two or three shorter stories. COMPLETE
This is the first in a trilogy of stories about a vampire-slayer Harry and a vampire Draco who are soulmates. Harry hates all vampires, and Draco is finding that Harry may be his Long Desired. The characters drive most of the plot. I recommend reading the rest of the series because it gets better.
Sequels: Viper and The Long Desired
Lomonaaeren writes a lot of Drarry fics and updates frequently.
2. A Year’s Temptation by Lomonaaeren
DMHP slash, post War, post Hogwarts. Draco isn’t pleased to discover he’s a Veela at twenty four, especially since both he and Harry are married to other people. Harry proposes a compromise that might work, or might make things monumentally worse. COMPLETE
I like that this is one of the few veela fics where Harry and Draco are adults. While there is cheating on a spouse as part of the plot, it’s an interesting relationship. What is great is that both hate that this has to happen, and there is some amazing character development.
Note: This story was written before the release of Deathly Hallows, but this warning mostly affects certain details about characters.
1. Black Truth by InferiorBeing
And, with bated breath, Draco traced the silver line down one more step in the familty tree. Draco Lucius Malfoy… the third full blooded Veriae in the Malfoy family… and future life mate of Harry Potter. HD SLASH No HBP spoilers
I found this story while I was going through a Veela stage. While this is not a Veela story, it follows a similar story line: Draco is the magical creature, Harry is his mate, they have trouble accepting this fact, and they have to fight the bad guys. I liked that InferiorBeing created a new creature. I also liked that Harry and Draco’s interactions with each other were not insta-love and that their characters were developed.
Note: This fanfic was published before The Half-Blood Prince.

There are more Drarry fanfics that I love, but I cannot remember most of their plot lines. I need to reread the stories in my favorites list.

Oh Harry Potter fan fiction! It is such a broad topic. I read a lot of what I call “crack ships” because they’re couples I would never expect to get together in the actual HP Universe but I love reading fan fiction about. I also seem to love reading about The Black Sisters. So, a couple I’ve read recently have been Hermione/Narcissa, Narcissa/Snape, Lucissa, and a few Bellamort fanfics.
One that I keep returning to is called “Save Me” by Sly Severus and it’s a Drarry story with some Lucissa and a touch of Hermione/George. It’s set after Deathly Hallows and it involves Narcissa finding out she has a rare genetic illness that only affects purebloods, and the only way that she will survive is via a transfusion. Of course Draco and Lucius aren’t a match so they have to reach out to Andromeda who isn’t too fond of her surviving sister and her family. While that’s the main thread there are other characters that come up.

I occasionally look for crack ships too. I think there was one where it was Snape and Sirius. I think I also read a Bellamort story once, but it was not at all the main focus of the story. My first HP ship was Dramione, but that eventually led to Drarry. I’ve also read too many Pottermort stories, but they have that great psychopathic element.

It’s really cool because it’s not epilogue complaint but it definitely shows that there were steps that had to be taken to “all was well?” And it pulls Andromeda into the mix as well.

I finished reading Save Me by Sly Severus. It’s different from other fanfics that I’ve read. I also liked that it was a fast-read for a 65-chapter story. That being said, there was insta-love, unresolved evil, and some things that I find problematic.
I liked the pairings for this story. Drarry was nice, but they resolved nothing from their childhood or the war. There is some meat there in their shared history that would make more sense for that bond to be so immediately close. I didn’t expect to like Hermione/George, but it was cute. They were insta-love too, but I was more okay with it for this couple. I expected Molly to stay hateful, but I’m not sure how I feel about her quick apology. Should I be happy? Should I feel dissatisfied? I suppose it could have dragged out the story longer, but not everything has to be sewn up at the end of a story.
I like that George turned Umbridge Two into a toad, but I wanted to see her either do more evil or get fired. Maybe both. Besides Andromeda’s more-or-less passive antagonism, she could have made sure that Hermione would miss an emergency call with the Malfoys, or fire Hermione.
It was interesting to see alcoholic HP characters, but I found it problematic that two alcoholics cured their alcoholism by falling in love with each other. I’m not buying that that would cure everything.

I am glad you liked it! It is far from the perfect fic and you have some very fair points. Didn’t think about how insane it would be for Umbridge Two to mess up Narcissa’s treatment and the mea culpas at the end are really tidy which I also don’t like. But for the most part I can’t say I don’t enjoy it when I pick it up. I do wish they dealt a little more with the unresolved issues of the war.

Yea I think about it more and there would be a lot to go through! But having this illness come up and having the one sister who would have helped dead was an interesting vehicle for them to try to sort out some of the baggage. I did like that. Also I did like how Lucius refuses to accept that Narcissa is going to die. I like to think that Lucius and Narcissa love each other so that denial seemed well placed.

Yeah. I like seeing them be in love instead of always having the cold mask for the public. I also thought it fit Lucius to refuse Narcissa’s coming death. “Malfoys don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Although I will say I see a lot of Narcissa reaching out to Andromeda and I liked that here Narcissa isn’t fooling herself into thinking she isn’t culpable in the death of Nymphadora and Remus. She really goes to placate Lucius and Draco!

You’re right about that. I find it refreshing for estranged family members to “know” that their sibling will refuse to help and didn’t want to ask for that reason. That’s a real reaction that I don’t see in fanfiction very often.

Yea, I like that and I want to see more of it. I would really like to see more of it in Andromeda and Narcissa reconciliation fanfics, but there was never a good reason for Narcissa to doubt approaching Andromeda. I do wish that the letters that Andromeda wrote to Narcissa came up sooner. Because at the end I was like “oh so this whole, ‘you never cared about me so I don’t expect you to help’ is a big misunderstanding!” I loved that it was, but I wanted more of a, “damn I’m sorry, look at this macrocosm of distance between us now” moment!

I have a fanfic I actually loved it has the best character development and a surperb plot line it’s called white lies and it’s about a potions experiment gone wrong where draco is effected and now has the ability to tell if people are lying. Some nasty side effects later and harry is roped into supervising him! All the feels!!!

I love this post! I’m a big Drarry shipper too, but I’ve never read any of these stories, so you can bet I’ll be going to check them out now. I love that you’ve given a bit of a background about when you discovered the story and what you were looking for at the time too. I especially like the sound of Black Truth, so I might get started on that straight away!

I think it was important to clarify what I was looking for because people look for different subject matter. As you know, some are looking for creature fics, or characters at certain stages of their lives, or something else. Specifically with Black Truth, I think it might be overlooked by the readers of Veela fics when they are quite similar. I hope you like it!

I loved a good fanfiction when I was in school. I started reading them on fictionalley, a site dedicated to Harry Potter fanfiction. I moved over to fanfiction.net when I started reading other fandoms. I was more of a Draco/Ginny person, BUT I can enjoy a well written Draco/Harry. I’ll have to check out some of these. I never got in to fanfics when I was reading the series so a part of me feels like I missed out on a lot of the fun^^ I just would reread the books/series over and over again LOL! I do like the whole drarry dynamic so these would be great ones to check out 🙂 Thanks for the recs!!

Black Truth was the first ever Drarry fanfic that I read! It was extremely hard finding a good fanfic after that. Such a good one that I read it twice in a row and started it a third time before I found an other good Drarry fanfic.

Recently, I finished a fanfiction on Archive of our own, called Men Who Love Dragons Too Much. It’s a drarry fic, and roughly 400,000 words in almost 50 chapters. It is intended for a more mature audience, but follows draco as an unregistered animagus in the 7th book plot-line. I honestly fell in love with this story, and I think we missed out on something that could have been amazing. I don’t have a link for it, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find.
