Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

On the Cover: Rose

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead is the sixth and final book in the Vampire Academy series. Spoiler alert! This is the synopsis on the inside cover:

Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules. She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir’s Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir princess, Lissa. She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri. And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardians to come.

Now the law has finally caught up with Rose — for a crime she didn’t even commit. She’s in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch. She’ll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall the execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.

But the clock on Rose’s life is running out. rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back . . . and this time she is truly out of second chances. The big question is, when your whole life is about saving others, who will save you?

Once again, this does not have a prologue. Rose is in the Royal Court Jail. She is passing the time bored and watching things through Lissa’s head. She wants to know who framed her and why. Lissa blocks Rose out of her head for an entire day. The next day, Rose can be in Lissa’s head again. Lissa is walking in the funeral procession when the monarch statues start to explode. Everything is chaotic. This makes the perfect distraction for Dimitri, Mikhail, Eddie, and Adrian to bust her out of jail. Rose and Dimitri quickly disappear, Rose is still miffed that she wasn’t told any part of the plan. After some grand theft auto and some scuffles, Rose and Dimitri get away to where Sydney, the Alchemist from Blood Promise, is waiting for them. They go to a rural town/village and stay in a motel. Rose tries escaping. Dimitri then pins her to the bed. Rose, still desperate to escape, starts making out with him (he kisses back) and then punches him. She runs and heads into the woods. After getting a ways away, she stops and checks in on Lissa. Dimitri catches up to her and captures her again. Rose finally realizes that she needs to stick around with Dimitri and Sydney, but she won’t sit idle, doing nothing. They make it back to the motel to find that she had dragged the police into this and Sydney was waiting for them elsewhere. Sydney is understandably pissed at Rose, partly because Abe (Rose’s father) chose the location and they wouldn’t be there anymore.

Rose convinces the other two that they need to find the illegitimate child of Eric Dragomir. They find it hard to accept when Rose shows them Tatianna’s note and had called the queen’s ghost to confirm it. They decide to do it. Sydney takes them to one of the Keepers locations, where they stay for a few days. The Keepers are a group of Moroi, Dhampirs, and humans who keep to the old ways: mating freely among the species and learning to fight (every species). They stay with the leaders of that group. Sydney finds that the only one who knows anything about Eric Dragomir’s bastard child is Sonya Karp, who is still a Strigoi. Rose has the misfortune of telling the Dashkov brothers about this. Rose visits the leader’s son’s cave (the son has a crush on her). He asks her to marry him, which she tries to even flat out say no. He gives her a bracelet to remember him by. They go back to the bonfire, where Rose is promptly attacked by his sister Angeline. Rose wins the fight and wants to know why Dimitri is laughing and why he didn’t help. Angeline had thought Rose had gotten betrothed to Angeline’s brother. It is tradition for the bride and one of the groom’s female relatives to fight to see if you are worthy. The males do the same too. Rose explains to everyone that she is not getting married and that this was a big misunderstanding. Dimitri does not have to fight. The three of them leave. Angeline pleaded to go with them, but they declined.

They find Sonya Karp’s home. They restrain her until the Dashkov brothers show up. Robert then stakes Sonya with a spirit charmed stake. Sonya becomes Moroi again. They find out that she does know where Eric’s child is but she won’t spill the beans. They come to an agreement that she can lead them to the Dragomir child. They find out that Eric’s illegitimate child is Jill Mastrano Dragomir (Dragomir was tacked on when it was found out). Before they can take her to Court, the Court guardians show up. Dimitri and Rose are on the run again. The guardians took Sydney and Jill’s parents into questioning. The Dashkov brothers kidnapped Jill. Sonya got away but was trying to reach Jill in a spirit dream. They find Jill and the Dashkov brothers. Rose ends up killing Victor and nearly goes completely crazy from taking Lissa’s spirit darkness. Robert is knocked out and abandoned elsewhere so he can’t bring Victor back as a shadow-kissed person.

During all of this, Lissa had been signed up to run for queen. She also passes all three trials. The first one was testing her reasoning skills. The second was seeing if she could face her fears. The third was answering this question: “what must a queen possess to truly rule her people?” By then, it came down to Lissa and two other candidates. Lissa can’t go to the actual elections because everyone thinks she is the last Dragomir, so she doesn’t have any family to support her.

They find out who actually committed the murder. They sneak back into Court with Rose and Dimitri disguised. They make it to where the candidates are. Rose and Dimitri shed their disguises. Guardians are on them, but they allow them to explain. Jill is the second Dragomir. They also explain that Tatianna’s assassin is Tanya Ozera, Christian’s aunt. She was mad about the age law and several other things. She framed Rose because she was jealous of Rose for winning Dimitri’s (Dimka’s) heart. Tanya nearly kills Lissa, but Rose jumps in front of Lissa and takes the bullet. Rose pulls herself out of death’s clutches, so she is no longer shadow kissed. Tanya and Danielle (she was trying to protect Adrian from being accused of anything) were arrested. Lissa becomes the queen and Jill becomes the Dragomir princess. Rose is in charge of guarding Lissa and Dimitri is to guard Christian Ozera.

This was a great conclusion the series. I couldn’t put the book down. I definitely recommend that you read it.
